Seattle has long been a melting pot of cultures, and for the Polish-American community, the Seattle Polish Foundation (SPF) is the heart that keeps its rich heritage alive. If you’ve ever bitten into a delicious pierogi at the bustling Pierogi Fest at the Polish Home or danced to the rhythm of traditional Polish music at Polish Festival Seattle in Seattle Center, you’ve already experienced the magic that SPF brings to the city. But there’s so much more behind the scenes!
More Than Just Events – A Community Pillar
SPF, formerly known as the Polish Home Foundation, established in 2012, isn’t just an event organizer. It’s a dedicated non-profit that ensures Polish culture thrives in the Pacific Northwest. From supporting folk dance groups to funding emergency aid for Poland, the foundation is a powerful hub for both preserving tradition and providing critical assistance when needed.
One of the upcoming ways the community can contribute to the work of SPF is through GiveBIG, happening on May 6-7, 2025. This annual event isn’t just about donations—it’s about strengthening the cultural fabric of Polish-Americans in Seattle. Every dollar raised helps fund vital projects, like supporting Polish schools, hosting cultural performances, and maintaining the historic Polish Home Association.
SPF and the Polish Home Association: A Strong Partnership
While SPF focuses on fundraising and financial support, it works closely with the Polish Home Association (PHA), the membership-based organization that owns and operates the Polish Home in Seattle. PHA serves as the physical and social hub for the Polish community, hosting events, cultural programs, and language classes. SPF ensures the necessary funds are available to maintain and improve the building, allowing it to continue serving as a vibrant gathering place.
This partnership has led to significant community improvements, including a new HVAC system at the Polish Home, funded through community donations and grants from the City of Seattle.
In recent years, SPF led a successful $60,000 campaign that brought a grand piano to the Polish Home in memory of Basia Strutyński, ensuring that live classical piano concerts could once again grace the halls of this historic venue.
SPF is also an important supporter of the Syrena Seattle Folk Dance Group and its efforts to purchase authentic folk costumes, bringing Polish heritage to life on stage.
Additionally, SPF provides financial support for cultural events held at the Polish Home and various groups using the Polish Home for their activities, such as Polish Scouts and Polish School.
Together, SPF and PHA ensure that Seattle’s Polish community not only has a space to gather but also the resources to grow and thrive.
The Power of Community Support
The impact of SPF’s fundraising efforts extends beyond the local community. When devastating floods struck Poland, SPF supporters quickly mobilized, raising over $3,500—matched with an additional $5,000 from the foundation—to send aid to those in need.
SPF also organizes smaller-scale collections for causes in Poland, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to international solidarity.
A Legacy Built on Generosity
Behind every donation, festival, and initiative is a network of passionate volunteers and contributors. In 2024 alone, SPF received over $74,435 in donations and grants, including generous estate gifts from community members who wanted their legacy to continue supporting Polish culture.
Looking ahead, SPF is setting its sights on another ambitious project for 2025: the floor and stage renovation of the upstairs dance hall at the Polish Home. This project is not just about aesthetics—it’s about creating a functional space where future generations can celebrate their heritage.
How You Can Be Part of It
The Seattle Polish Foundation thrives because of the community. Whether you donate during GiveBIG, volunteer at an event, or simply attend a festival to celebrate Polish culture, your involvement makes a difference.
So, the next time you savor a pierogi, enjoy a lively folk performance, or attend a concert at the Polish Home Association, remember—this is all made possible by people like you. Want to be part of something bigger? Visit the Seattle Polish Foundation website, make a donation, or sign up to volunteer. Together, we can ensure that Polish heritage in Seattle not only survives but thrives for generations to come!
