The results of the first round of the presidential elections in Poland are in. I promised to remain neutral and avoid politics, but I cannot stay silent. When I see that 6% (12% in US, 17% in Canada) of Poles are voting for a fascist who openly calls for restoring the death penalty, promises to imprison women, reduce the congress and senate, increase presidential power, and restore a sovereign Poland (think North Korea) all in the name of God, I had to say something. Additionally, 51% voted for the extreme right that wants Poland to exit the EU.
Poland, a country that was under occupation for over 200 years, has experienced incredible growth and prosperity for the first time in the last twenty years. From a third-world country under a communist regime, it has transformed into one of the fastest-growing economies in Europe. Poland is now a thriving country with modern highways, transportation, shopping malls, sewage plants, and more. Critics will always find something to complain about, but if you have lived in Poland, recently visited, or watched the recent Rick Steves episode, you have seen firsthand that this is a modern, beautiful, and prosperous country. Much of this success is thanks to its membership in the European Union. Suggesting that Poland should leave the EU means no more free trade, no more free travel, no security, and an unhinged government that has no respect for democracy. For those who are not yet convinced, look at the UK after Brexit. Trade was reduced by 15%, productivity decreased by 4%, food prices increased by 25%, and visas are now required for most countries. The pound sterling experienced its largest fall within a single day in 30 years after the referendum. This led to lost pensions, savings, and a decline in the quality of life.
Only 618 people registered and 546 voted in Seattle. This is sad. Seattle can do better. Poland experienced extreme progress and prosperity in last 20 years, thanks to membership in EU. Let’s not waste it. The future of Poland and Europe is in our hands.
So here is my pledge: don’t let the inmates run the asylum. Vote. If you haven’t registered, you can still register and vote in the second round. Below are all the details.
