Polish Book Club: “Król”

The book for the meeting is Król by Szczepan Twardoch, published in 2016. Painting a panorama of Warsaw Polish-Jewish with the hero being an associate to a gangster with blood on his hands and a box champion at the same time who reigns in the last years before WWII and then tries to save himself and his family from the Germans. The book is available in English as The King of Warsaw

Twardoch is a Silesian and his books have a different perspective on Polish-German history, colored by the fate of the Silesia province and the experience of Poles living there under Germans for centuries. His notable books include Morphine / Morfina about a Polish-German morphine addict trying to avoid hard choices in face of the 1939 WWII German invasion of Poland.
